NT runs all over Tonawanda in annual JV game

The Tonawanda News

Tonawanda News — Sophomore quarterback Ryan McDonough ran North Tonawanda's option offense seemingly to perfection on Wednesday night, helping the Lumberjacks cruise to a 41-7 victory over cross town rival Tonawanda in the annual JV T-NT game.

Jacks coach Ed O'Neil was happy for his kids after the game.

"We ran the ball well," he said. "It's very nice for these kids to get a win, especially on a school night like this. They'll be able to go to school tomorrow and everybody will be talking about it."

The Jacks controlled the line of scrimmage from the opening kickoff and attacked the Warriors defense on the ground with a lethal triple option that allowed a host of NT ball carriers to accumulate big runs.

Sophomore back Tanner Colucci starred in the first half, gashing the Tonawanda defense on pitches from McDonough. The speedy back totaled 90 yards on eight carries and scored two touchdowns.

The most impressive part of Colucci's game is that he is still developing as a football player. O'Neil said he has a chance to be really good if he's able to improve in some areas.

"Tanner could be a good football player," O'Neil said. "He has to work on some things he's a little weak in. He has to become a better student of the game and learn about everything that's going on around him … But overall he works hard."

McDonough completed 3 of 4 passes for 63 yards, but he did most of his damage on the ground out of the option. He rushed for 55 yards and scored two touchdowns in the win.

O'Neil said his young signal caller has shown the most improvement from game to game this season.

The option offense the Jacks run can be confusing to younger quarterbacks, but McDonough has done a nice job learning the system.

The Warriors couldn't get anything going offensively in the first half and went into the locker room down 34-0. Quarterback Joshua Large led the Warriors out in the second half and orchestrated a long drive that lasted the entire third quarter.

Running back Austin Henderson finished off the drive with an 8-yard touchdown run to get the goose egg of the scoreboard.

North Tonawanda running backs Sam Milioto and Daniel McGee combined for 121 yards on the ground and each rushed for a touchdown. The Warriors turned the ball over twice in the loss.
