High Schools: Lady Jacks improve to 10-1 in volleyball

Tonawanda News — The North Tonawanda Lumberjacks girls' volleyball team improved to 10-1 on the season by defeating the Grand Island Vikings in three sets (25-12, 33-31, 25-16).

Gabby Hansen led the way for the Lumberjacks with 19 kills, 16 digs and four aces. Liz Wiltz chipped in with five kills and three blocks and Danielle Kenney had 11 digs to pull out the victory.

The Lumberjacks' next match is on Saturday afternoon at Ken East.

Ken West 3, Lew-Port 0

Alyssa Schwartz had five aces, three kills and two blocks and Jess Garainor recorded six kills to help the Blue Devils (3-7) defeat the Lancers (0-11) 25-9, 25-8, 25-17.

Nia.-Wheatfield 3, Ken East 1

Kirsten Klettke had seven kills and four blocks, Katie Mazierski recorded nine kills, seven aces and 15 digs and Ashley Ward notched 32 assists and four aces in the Falcons' (9-1) win over the Bulldogs (2-8) 25-13, 17-25, 25-13, 25-20. Sara Taylor had six blocks and four kills and Paige Palmer added six blocks and six kills for the Bulldogs.

Lockport 3, Niagara Falls 1

Brittany Sanford notched 12 kills and four blocks to lead the Lions (7-3 NFL) past the Wolverines (6-4 NFL) 26-27, 25-13, 25-11, 25-20.

Starpoint 3, Lake Shore 1

After dropping the first set in a fierce battle 27-29, Starpoint (4-6, 4-5 ECIC II) rallied to win their next three sets, 25-19, 25-9, 25-18 to defeat Lake Shore. Jenna Faulkner had 12 kills for the Spartans, Allison Koithan notched 20 digs and Hattie Lasal added 17 assists.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Williamsville East 3, Kenmore West 0

Eric Marecki recorded 13 kills to lead the Flames (6-2) to a win over the Blue Devils. 

Grand Island 3, North Tonawanda 0

Brock Tetreault had 15 kills to lead the Vikings (5-1) in their victory over the Lumberjacks (4-3) 25-12, 25-19, 25-19. Joe Piotrowski chipped in with 15 assists for the Lumberjacks.

Lockport 3, Niagara Falls 0

The Lions (6-0) downed the Wolverines (0-6) in three straight sets by scores of 25-1, 25-17 and 25-10.

GIRLS SOCCER

Lew-Port 4, Kenmore West 2

Cristina Catalano and Abby Neal scored in regulation for the Lancers and Anna Kromer and Chelsea Gunderson scored in overtime to give them a win over the Blue Devils.

Grand Island 8, Niagara Falls 0

Marcy Barbaric and Madisyn Pezzino each had a pair of goals and Lexi Kalinowski, Carly Bernatovicz, Tiffany Melendez and Megan Thomas chipped in with goals of their own to lead the Vikings (7-1-2, 6-1-2 NFL) to an 8-0 shutout victory against the Wolverines (3-7).

Sarah Eykowicz, the Vikings' junior varsity goalkeeper, stepped in to make seven saves to preserve the shutout after the team's normal starter was injured — an impressive accomplishment to head coach Dave Bowman.

"I'm really pleased with today's outcome — we moved the ball around well and finished well — but what really stood out to me was Eykowicz stepping in on short notice and performing the way she did. That was very impressive," Bowman said. "Today's win was a total team effort."

Lockport 2, Niagara-Wheatfield 1

Jill Golding and and Gretta Dry each scored to keep the Lions undefeated (11-0, 9-0 NFL). Gabby Rose notched the lone goal for the Falcons.

Casey Morgan got the game-winning goal in double overtime as the Blue Devils downed the Lancers.

Ken East 0, North Tonawanda 0

Connor Hoar made seven saves to preserve a tie between the Bulldogs (4-5-2, 4-4-1 NFL) and the Lumberjacks.

Grand Island 7, Niagara Falls 3

Troy Brady and Ryan Ross each scored a pair of goals to lead the Vikings (8-3, 8-1 NFL) to victory over the Wolverines (0-11, 0-9 NFL). Kyle Woods was the leading goal scorer for the Wolverines with two goals.

Nia.-Wheatfield 6, Lockport 1

Noah Seiler had a hat trick and Rocco Strangio, Don Pitruzela and Austin Wangler added a goal apiece as the Falcons (8-4, 8-2 NFL) beat the Lions (5-6, 4-5 NFL).

GIRLS TENNIS

Starpoint 3, Sweet Home 2

Jasmine Mott and Gillian Mangani won in singles (6-3, 6-0; 6-2, 6-1) while Amanda Grant and MacKenzie Ellingson emerged victorious in doubles sets (6-0, 4-0) for the Spartans over the Panthers.

BOYS GOLF

Ken East 265, Ken West 270

Chuck Panepinto medaled by shooting 39 as the Bulldogs (12-1) defeated the Blue Devils (1-11-1) at Sheridan Park.

Nia.-Wheatfield 257, North Tonawanda 265

Devin Donohue shot 39 and John Anderson shot 40 to lead the Falcons (9-5) to victory over the Lumberjacks (4-9) at Tan Tara Golf Club. Logan Cyr medaled for the Lumberjacks by shooting 37.

Lew-Port 259, Niagara Falls 267

James Spanbauer medaled for the Wolverines (3-9-1) by shooting 40 and Joe Laurendi and Chris Corbetta had the lowest scores for the Lancers (4-8) with 41 and 42, respectively, at their match at Hyde Park.
