Tonawanda News — Nick Garcia scored the game's only goal to lift Niagara University's men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over rival Canisius in a 'Battle of the Bridge' series matchup in Buffalo Wednesday evening.
His goal came in the 64th minute from about 20 yards out, with the senior captain putting the ball into the upper left corner of the net past Canisius goalkeeper Ryan Arvin.
Niagara's Brendan Ottman made four saves to earn the "clean sheet."
The game got testy towards its end, with three of the five yellow cards issued coming within the final ten minutes of the match.
Garcia, coincidently, was named Niagara's Student-Athlete of the Week earlier in the day for his first goal of the season, which lifted Niagara to its first conference victory of the season last week against Rider.
The Niagara-Canisius rivalry continues on the soccer field today but with much higher stakes. The women's teams face each other at 2 p.m. in the first round of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, taking place at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Florida.
In their only other meeting this season, Niagara defeated Canisius, 1-0. The Purple Eagles women (3-5-2 MAAC) are seeded eighth in the MAAC Tournament while the Golden Griffins (3-7-0) are seeded ninth.
