Tonawanda News — It’s been a great partnership that’s getting better and better each day.
The Buffalo Bisons and parent Toronto Blue Jays will celebrate their affiliation with a special Blue Jays weekend at Coca-Cola Field, June 21-22.
The highlight of the Bisons 8-game home stand, the Blue Jays weekend will feature multiple giveaways and an two autograph sessions with former Blue Jay greats Kelly Gruber and Fred “Crime Dog” McGriff.
One of the highlights of the Bisons schedule, the Blue Jays weekend is just another example of the Jays strong commitment to the Bisons and the city of Buffalo.
“Oh for sure. Obviously it’s been a fantastic partnership both on the field and off,” said Buffalo Bisons director of media relations, Brad Bisbing. “Last year we did ‘Blue Jays Day’ and had such tremendous success with the amount of fans that came to it. We had Duane Ward and (Candy) Maldonado that (day). So we decided to make a whole weekend out of it because we had such great feedback. So we got two more players, we’ve added the special uniform that we’re going to use and worked with the Blue Jays to develop that so it can look like one of their jerseys from the past.”
The weekend kicks off with a single-admission doubleheader against Syracuse (first pitch 5:35). McGriff and Gruber will do ceremonial first pitches before the second game then be available for autographs from the first-fourth innings of game two.
On Sunday, “Ace” the Blue Jays mascot will throw out first pitch (1:05 start) while Gruber and McGriff meet with fans between 12:30-2pm.
Gruber, a two-time all-star, spent nearly his entire 10-year MLB career with Toronto where he hit 117 home runs. Gruber also played 111 games for the then Double-A Buffalo Bisons at War Memorial Stadium in 1983.
