Former Bill Kelso to speak at concussion seminar

— — A concussion seminar will take place at 6:30 p.m. today at Cardinal O’Hara High School to help better inform student-athletes, parents, coaches and referees about the new Concussion Management and Awareness Act, which will establish statewide safeguards to protect student athletes from brain injuries while participating in interscholastic sports or physical education classes.

Former Buffalo Bills safety Mark Kelso will be on hand to talk about his personal experience with concussions as well as the Gazoo, a protective cap in which he made famous in the early 1990s.

John Leddy, of the University at Buffalo, will explain a clinical study he spearheaded on the effects concussions can have on young athletes. He will also detail what symptoms to watch for should a sports player be injured during a game, at practice or during physical education classes.

The session, which is open to all, will also explain the long-term effects concussion can have on athletes at any age. All are welcomed. Assemblyman Robin Schimminger will host the discussion and delve into the new guidelines that could take effect as early as July 2012.
