Waterlogged Wednesday halts area sports

Tonawanda News — Four Tonawanda-area baseball and softball games scheduled for Wednesday fell victim to the rain-drenched fields as weather continues to get the best of springtime sports.

Only one high school game got underway, in girls’ lacrosse. North Tonawanda took on Niagara Falls at Niagara University under the lights and lost to the Wolverines, 14-5.

Tonawanda was set to host Alden in both sports while North Tonawanda’s baseball and softball games against Kenmore West were also no-gos.

Four area boys tennis matches were also rained out. That list included Grand Island at North Tonawanda, Depew at Tonawanda, Niagara Falls at Kenmore East and Kenmore West at Niagara.-Wheatfield.

North Tonawanda’s game against Williamsville North was the only boys lacrosse match that elected not to test the weather.

Postponement dates were not immediately determined.

Niagara University’s scheduled softball doubleheader Wednesday against St. Bonaventure was, like many other local sports events, cancelled due to rain.

The games against the Bonnies will not be rescheduled.

Niagara (16-28, 6-10 MAAC) will conclude its regular season this weekend with a pair of doubleheaders. First they’ll travel to Quinnipiac on Saturday, with the first game beginning at 1 p.m., and then host Siena on Sunday, beginning at noon.
