Thunder win big over Lancers, 13-2

Tonawanda News —

Marielle Buffamonte scored four goals in the senior night romp of St. Mary's of Lancaster, Wednesday.

Buffamonte, a senior, also added two assists as her Thunder went on to win 13-2.

The victory comes as Mount St. Mary hosted its third annual "Stick it to Cancer Game." This year's contest honored Patrick Waldron, a 2011 St. Joseph's graduate who has been battling Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

The team and its boosters set up a concession stand and sold t-shirts emblazoned with the slogan "We are Pat-strong."

Waldron's sister, Madeline Waldron, a 2009 Mount St. Mary's graduate, was present to accept the honor in place of her brother.

All proceeds from the game will be donated to the Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Waldron's name.

The game started after an hour-long rain delay. The Lancers (3-7) put the pressure on early, challenging the defense lead by goalie Margaret Lorenc. The Thunder (10-1) held up as shots from the Lancers could not find the net.

Lorenc stopped six shots in the victory.

Mount St. Mary struck fast and often after the Lancers threatened. Buffamonte scored her first of the game followed by two quick goals from junior Olivia MacDonald.

Senior Jessica Hart put her team up by four, firing a shot past the Lancers' goaltender. Hart finished with two goals.

Thunder head coach Marissa Dauria was not surprised by her teams early efforts.

"We have been progressing the whole year, getting a lot better in each game," said Dauria. "We are hitting our stride now, right before the playoffs."

The Thunder kept piling them on, scoring five more goals to end the half, including three goals from Buffamonte and two goals from senior Elise Kreuz.

Kruez finished the game with three goals and two assists.

The Lancers got on the board in the second half when sophomore Maddie Wnuk made a quick cut to the front of the net, shooting a quick one past Lorenc.
