Szczerbinski leads the way in final for Team USA

Tonawanda News — North Tonawanda native John Szczerbinski helped lift Team USA to a gold medal in the men's doubles event Aug. 21 in the 2013 World Tenpin Bowling Association World Championships.

Szcerbinski and Chris Barnes teamed to defeat Finland's Pasi Uotila and Osku Palerma, 569-473, to take the gold medal match at Sunset Station's Strike Zone Bowling Center.

With everything on the line in the championship match, Szczerbinski stepped up and bowled a 290 game after struggling in the six games of qualifying early in the day. The Wichita State graduate was thrilled to perform well when the championship was on the line.

"Chris was the work horse (Wednesday), and I was just piggybacking off of him," Szczerbinski said in a release. "To be able to come back after the way I bowled in qualifying and help Chris out in the medal round makes this feel even better."

Barnes was also excited after the win and thinks it will be a long time before any doubles team beats his and Szczerbinski's final-round score.

"I've been fortunate to win other gold medals but winning the doubles is a first for me," Barnes said. "There's nothing better than hearing your national anthem at the World Championships."

Szczerbinski totaled a 1,237 in his six qualifying games, while Barnes put up a 1,502 which included a perfect game.

In the women's final on Thursday, Stefanie Nation and Shannon O'Keefe brought home the gold medal for Team USA.
