Tonawanda News — North Tonawanda's John Szczerbinski was recently named to the Team USA men's roster for the 2013 Tenpin Bowling Association World Championships being held at the Strike Zone Bowling Center in Henderson, Nev. from Aug. 16-30.
His selection marks the third time Szczerbinski has been a member of Team USA after also competing twice for the Junior Team USA.
This will be Szczerbinski's first World Championships appearance.
"There's nothing ilke it in the sport of bowling, especially with the excitement level and anxiety level," Szczerbinski said in a news release. "It's an incredible feeling to come through not only for yourself but for the team, the coaches and the people who support you."
Szczerbinski, who won a team bronze medal at the 2008 WTBA World Youth Championships as a Junior Team USA member, is coming off a strong early-2013 performance on the PBA tour.
He teamed up with bowling icon Pete Weber, Tommy Jones, Scott Norton and Jack Jurek to form the WTT New York City KingPins in the inaugural PBA team play season. The KingPins captured the Elias Cup on April 7 and Szczerbinski played a large role in the team's success.
Szczerbinski will be joined on Team USA by Chris Barnes (Double Oak, Texas), Mike Fagan (Dallas, Texas), John Janawicz (Winter Haven, Fla.), Tommy Jones (Simpsonville, S.C.) and Bill O'Neill (Langhorne, Pa.).
"We have a very talented group of athletes on Team USA, as we saw at training camp," Team USA head coach Rod Ross said in a release. "We had some very difficult decisions during the selection process but we will have (an experienced team) to defend our (title) at the World Championships."
Sczerbinski can't wait for the World Championships to begin.
"It's a dream come true and an honor to be selected to represent my country at the highest level of bowling," Szczerbinski said.
