Hess's 26 points not enough for Warriors

During a timeout with four minutes left in the game, the Warriors found themselves trailing 39-36 to Holland. They had been down as much as 12 points in the third quarter and the momentum had finally swayed over to their side.

But Holland’s Clay Lewis came out of the timeout and hit a 3-pointer in back-to-back possessions, which secured a 47-42 victory for the Dutchmen.

“(Lewis) was probably the best shooter I’ve seen in this gym on the away team, ever,” said Tonawanda coach Hank Hughes. “He hit those two deep threes that were too much to overcome.”

Lewis finished with a team-high 22 points, and four 3-pointers. Storm Phillips chipped in with 14 points including two 3-pointers of his own. As a team, Holland hit seven 3-pointers, compared to five for Tonawanda.

“We shoot a lot of threes every day because we don’t have much size,” said Holland coach Tim Schulz. “I think that our rebounding defensively was pretty solid given the size (difference).”

The Warriors struggled to find their offense through much of the game and scored only 16 points by the end of the first half. But they only trailed by seven points entering the fourth quarter.

Tonawanda’s Clayton Hess had 11 of the Warriors’ 14 points in the quarter, and a game-high 26 total points.

“At times we didn’t get him the ball when he was wide open,” Hughes said. “That’s the way we should have played in the first half, is getting it down low to him.”

Hess hit a 3-pointer in transition — one of his three in the game — with a little under two minutes left that brought the Warriors back within three points, but they failed to find the basket the rest of the game.

“(Hess) wants to win, he’s more frustrated than I am,” Hughes said.

Tyler Hughes was second on the team in scoring with six points and point guard Ben Stich had six assists in the game.
