HS HOCKEY: Bowman Cup rosters finalized

The Buffalo and Rochester rosters for the 2009 Scotty Bowman Showcase have been finalized, and they include several local standouts.

The fifth annual Showcase, which features the top high school-aged hockey players from Buffalo and Rochester, takes place Thursday at HSBC Arena, beginning with the junior teams from each city facing off at 6 p.m., followed by the senior teams at 8. Admission and parking to the event are free.

Buffalo’s senior roster includes 2009 Niagara Gazette Player of the Year Nick Burns of Niagara-Wheatfield, as well as St. Joe’s Cory Dawson and Marc Benzino, the Wheatfield Jr. Blades’ Chris Williams and Kenmore East’s P.J. Bluff and Brett Rogers.

Former Buffalo Sabres defenseman Grant Ledyard is the team’s head coach.

The winner of the senior game will be awarded the Scotty Bowman Cup, and it will be presented by the legendary Sabres coach for whom it is named. The Buffalo seniors have won the Bowman Cup three of the past four years.

Buffalo’s junior roster features Ken East’s Mark Arnone, who was the 2009 Tonawanda News Player of the Year, plus Niagara-Wheatfield’s David Evert and St. Joe’s Michael Schreck.

Local coaches Kyle Pray (Kenmore East) and Rich Crozier (St. Joe’s) are assistant coaches for the team, with former Sabres defenseman Larry Playfair serving as head coach.

For the second year in a row, the Music Is Art Foundation is sponsoring a “Battle of the Bands.” Finalists will perform throughout the event in front of a panel of music industry professionals. One will be named Best High School Band in WNY.
