Man arrested in city for child porn

Tonawanda News — A Niagara Falls man who was staying in a house on Frederick Court in the City of Tonawanda was arrested Tuesday for possession of child pornography.

Tonawanda police said James A. Staley, 28, of Ontario Avenue, Niagara Falls, is currently on probation for a first-degree reckless endangerment conviction in North Tonawanda in January 2011.

Niagara County probation officers had information he was staying in a Tonawanda home and went there to check on his whereabouts.

During the course of the check and investigation, officers found at least two images of child pornography on Staley’s cell phone. The probation officers informed Tonawanda police of the situation and Staley was arrested around 7:50 p.m.

“He admitted he downloaded the pictures off an Internet website,” Lt. Fredric Foels said.

Officers seized the phone as evidence. Staley also had access to other computers and external hard drives at the house, and the owner of the home allowed officers to take the items be checked.

Foels said the arrest is a violation of his probation and not notifying the probation officers of his whereabouts may be a violation as well. Staley had been staying at the Tonawanda home for about six months.

The crime is an E felony, and Staley is scheduled for a felony hearing at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in Tonawanda City Court. He is being held in lieu of $25,000 bail.

“It’s a very serious charge,” Foels said.
