TOWN OF TONAWANDA: Street race yields pair of DWI arrests

Town of Tonawanda police arrested two drivers for DWI after stopping both cars for racing early Friday morning.
An officer observed a vehicle pull from the left lane into the right lane on Colvin Boulevard without signaling the lane change, rolling up beside another car at the light. Both drivers then revved their engines, and the car in the left lane screeched its tires as the cars took off. The car on the right narrowly missed hitting a curb, according to police reports.
Police pulled over both cars, speaking first with Amy LaVango, driver of the car that spun out at the light. The officer detected the odor of alcohol, and LaVango allegedly failed multiple field sobriety tests. A breath test revealed her to have a 0.17 percent blood alcohol content, leading police to charge her with felony DWI due to more than one previous DWI conviction. She was also charged with unsafe movement of a stopped motor vehicle.
Officers then spoke with the second driver, identified as Anthony P. Tabbi II. They also smelled the odor of alcohol on Tabbi’s breath as he explained to them he had no license. Tabbi failed multiple field sobriety tests and a breath test revealed a 0.17 percent blood alcohol content. He was charged with DWI, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and illegal signal.
