At a brief special session Wednesday, the Tonawanda City School District school board voted to accept Athletic Director Dawn Bak’s resignation.
Only Board Trustee Elizabeth Olka voted against the resolution, which provides for Bak to continue in her position until Dec. 31. Before being told she needed to go into executive session to discuss the matter, Board President Lynn Casal said the arrangement’s end date was to provide Bak with 60 days worth of severance pay.
This is not the first time Bak’s termination has been on the board’s agenda. At the Oct. 27 meeting, the board voted to remove an item that would have made Bak’s resignation official on Nov. 2 and moved her to a long-term substitute position teaching physical education at Mullen Elementary until June 30, 2010. Now it seems Bak will be parting ways with the district directly after leaving her athletic director position.
The athletic director has often been the target of parent and coach criticism during board meetings, most recently over the scheduling of girls soccer games and a lack of response over fixing the situation.
Bak didn’t return phone calls requesting comment and Casal said she couldn’t comment on the details of a personnel matter. The board president did say the district is looking at how to best fill the job Bak has been performing.
“We’re looking at all of our possibilities right now,” Casal said.
Board Vice President Jim Weber said no one is being hired to replace Bak full time. He added that the board is evaluating the position and said none of Bak’s responsibilities will be left unattended.
“Someone will be doing the job,” he said.
