Mandy Galas Dragoo, a former outstanding athlete from Tonawanda High school, was the new senior recreation leader at the Kohler Street Youth Center.

• A mighty swing of a golden sledge-hammer followed by the cheers of those assembled marked the official start of the Mount St. Mary Senior Housing Project in the Town of Tonawanda.

1989 - 25 years ago

Jim Tasker, Jay Soeman and Osh Bedell were on hand for the Tonawanda and North Tonawanda Downtown Merchants Association get acquainted dinner at the Sweeney Street Café.

• The Wheatfield Blades captured the championship of the inaugural Presidents Day Weekend Mite Hockey Tournament at Brighton and Lincoln arenas.

1964 - 50 years ago

• Town of Tonawanda police detective Kenneth Sweeney landed a 10-foot, 11-inch sailfish that weighed 148 pounds while he was on vacation in Acapulco. He had the fish mounted and sent to his home.

• The Army Corps of Engineers were doing a $42 million study on the feasibility of an All American Canal between Buffalo and Lake Ontario.

1944 - 70 years ago

• A resolution was offered for the adoption of a charter amendment prepared by City Attorney Roland Baxter, to create a receivership in Tonawanda for the receipt of rentals or other income from properties on which liens were secured for nonpayment of taxes.

• The Honor Roll of Felton Grammar School for the first quarter of the spring term contained 226 names. The excellent average of 97 percent was earned by Jean McLean and Lois Hoyer.
