Tonawanda News — St. John the Baptist was ranked as the top middle school in the Tonawandas’ according to Business First’s annual ratings.
The school came in at 55th out of 205 schools in the eight-county region of Western New York. St. John’s ranking dropped from 15th place last year. Ratings were based on four years of test scores compiled by the New York State Education Department.
Tonawanda Middle School was ranked 57th and St. Francis of Assisi School was ranked 58th. St. Amelia School was ranked 75th, Hoover in the Ken-Ton district was ranked 77th and Franklin Middle was ranked 79th.
Transit Middle School in Williamsville led the pack at first place for the ninth time since 2002. City Honors came in second and St. Gregory the Great came in third.

• St. Andrew’s Country Day School, 103rd
• St. Matthew Lutheran School, 127th
• North Tonawanda Middle School, 131st
• CS for Applied Technologies, 158th
Business First also released a database of schools’ average SAT scores. Locally, Kenmore West has the highest average score of 1,503 out of 2,400. North Tonawanda was close behind with an average of 1,500 and Kenmore East’s average was 1,471. Tonawanda High School’s average was 1,451.
The scores are from the state Education Department and are from 2012.
