    Not long ago, the Bills needed Whitner to speak for them. Collectively. He was one of the lone voices on a team that often seemed to meander without purpose. Whitner tried to keep the defensive unit cohesive, but it wasn’t necessarily easy.

April’s units are always among the league’s best and more important, he seems in command and forward-thinking. But this year, we’ll find out what he’s really made of.

    OK, college hockey, now I’m really confused. The powers that be have blocked Niagara’s road into one of the four power conferences — ECAC, Hockey East, CCHA, and WCHA — even though the Purple Eagles have spent a good chunk of time in top 20 polls and consistently play teams from those conferences tough.

    As long as the Power continue to be faith-based, they’ll always be behind the 8-ball. Segregating players makes little sense, especially in a city that can become rightfully touchy on the issue of preferential treatment.

    We’re all for the Niagara men’s hockey team being able to play the schedule it deems necessary, but let’s give Ed McLaughlin two minutes for lamest excuse when the Niagara athletics director was asked why the hockey series between Niagara and Canisius won’t continue this year.
