TOWN OF TONAWANDA: Pools close this week

If you’re looking to enjoy what little warm weather we’re getting by taking a dip under the sun in the town, you’d better do it soon.
Councilman Dan Crangle, chairman of the Youth, Parks and Recreation Committee, said the majority of the town’s pools will close Sunday at 5 p.m.
The only exception, Lincoln Pool, will be open a little longer, closing for the season at 5 p.m. on Sept. 1, said Youth, Parks and Recreation Department Director Dan Wiles.
“We usually go by an eight-week season,” Wiles said. “Then we look to keep Lincoln Park open for an extra week.”
The length of the swimming season is a direct result of the school year, since kids going back to school dries up the supply of people with free time to supervise swimmers.
“When the college kids go back in mid-August, we lose most of our lifeguard staff,” Wiles said.
Lincoln Pool will fill the splashing needs of residents until the pool at the Aquatic and Fitness Center reopens on Sept. 2. A new liner was installed this year at Lincoln Pool, one of the busiest town water facilities, since the old one was getting too expensive to repair, Wiles said.
The bottom of the AFC’s pool was also replaced over the summer while the outdoor pools were a viable option for swimmers. But now that summer vacation is over, the fun will have to move indoors after Labor Day.
