Ken-Ton plans district-wide behavior program

Tonawanda News — Kenmore Middle School will implement a new initiative, Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports, a research-based approach to promote positive behaviors and maximize academic achievement.

“By the start of the 2014-2015 school year, all schools within the Kenmore-Town of Tonawanda Union Free School District will put the PBIS program into full operation,” Superintendent Mark Mondanaro, said. “All Ken-Ton schools will use this proactive approach to educate, reinforce, and reward positive behavior in our students.”

The PBIS program teaches students required behaviors, reinforces and recognizes students who model these behaviors, and puts a system in place to provide interventions and supports to assist students who have challenges in meeting behavioral expectations.

Teachers, administrators, counselors and support staff will take responsibility to teach positive behavior expectations to all students. 

“Our students will know exactly what is expected of them and what consequences will result when they choose not to meet these expectations. Everyone will be on the same page,” Mondanaro said. “Students who take responsibility to behave positively will be recognized and rewarded in a variety of ways for their positive behavior.”

Schools that implement behavioral systems report an increase in attendance and academic performance, as well as a reduction in the proportion and number of behavioral disruptions, resulting in more time on task and increased instructional time.

In addition, both teachers and students view school as a more positive and calm environment that is conducive to both teaching and student success.

Continuous PBIS lessons throughout the school year teach students how to behave in every setting within school. Students will be encouraged to conduct positive behavior at home and throughout the community as well.

Parents, teachers and students must work together to share the responsibility to develop positive character traits in all students.
