Town man pleads guilty in drug ring

BUFFALO — A Town of Tonawanda man pleaded guilty Wednesday in U.S. District Court for his role in a drug distribution racket.

Richard Himbury, 40, St. Amelia Drive, was arrested in November by federal agents following a high-speed chase in East Aurora, where he threw four ounces of cocaine from his vehicle before losing control of it and flipping over before capture.

Police later searched his Tonawanda home and discovered 17 additional pounds of cocaine and 100 pounds of marijuana, as well as $120,000 in cash. Himbury had been running a drug ring out of his house, said Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael L. McCabe, who is overseeing the case.

He was charged along with 22 others including another Tonawanda man, David Link, for what authorities say was their involvement in two drug dealing enterprises spreading from Buffalo to Alleghany and Genesee counties.

Town of Tonawanda police also assisted in the investigation along with a slew of local and national law enforcement agencies.

Police said a year-long investigation focused on Himbury showed he was one of several major suppliers in Western New York. The probe, named “Operation Babcock,” led to the seizure of several kilograms of cocaine and roughly $58,500, according state Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman.

On Wednesday, he admitted to conspiring to distribute over 15 kilograms of cocaine and 450 kilograms of marijuana before District Judge Richard J. Arcara in Buffalo.

The charges carry a minimum sentence of 20 years in prison, a fine of $20 million, or both. Himbury will be sentenced Dec. 12.
