Ken-Ton's first IB class graduates

Tonawanda News — The Ken-Ton School District announced Tuesday that its first group of students enrolled in Kenmore West’s International Baccalaureate Diploma curriculum surpassed the program’s state, national and global pass rates.

Among the 53 graduating seniors participating in the program, 46 completed all the requirements for the full diploma.

“Eighty-five percent of Kenmore West’s IB candidates earned the full diploma,” Superintendent Mark Mondanaro said. “The New York state pass rate is about 65 percent, nationally, the pass rate is about 70 percent and globally, 78.5 percent.”

The program, which is implemented in Ken-Ton in September 2011, is an internationally recognized advance course of study offered in more than 130 countries. The courses provide college-level work in six subjects over two years, and successful completion requires a research paper, extracurricular activities and community service.

Ken-Ton said in a press release that IB students are more likely to stay in college and attain four-year degrees.

Kenmore West’s IB graduates were offered many scholarships and are attending various colleges including Brown, Cornell, Boston College, Syracuse, Northwestern and American University.

“Our program has the three ingredients necessary for success: well-trained and committed teachers, enthusiastic, hard-working students, and supportive parents and district leadership,” Vanessa Scinta, the IB diploma coordinator at Kenmore West High School said.

Kenmore West’s 2014 class has 49 IB students, the class of 2015 has 54 students and the class of 2016 has over 90 students in the preparation courses for the program.

Kenmore East began its IB program in September 2012 and the first cohort of IB students will graduate in next year.
