Town teen killed crossing Youngmann expressway

Tonawanda News — TOWN OF TONAWANDA — A teenager was struck and killed by a tractor trailer in the early morning hours Thursday on the Youngmann expressway.

Marc Zellner, 18, of Tonawanda, was pronounced dead after police said he was hit by a semi heading westbound on the I-290 at approximately 1:30 a.m. west of the Colvin Boulevard exit, according to a statement released by Lt. Paul Yacono, a senior accident investigator with the Town of Tonawanda Police Department. Police believe he was struck in the far right lane of the highway after crossing from the east.

The accident shut down the highway for more than five hours between Delaware Avenue and Colvin Boulevard. The driver, whose name was not released and who was uninjured, will not be charged after police said an investigative unit inspected his log books and condition.

“They didn’t find anything and that’s why the driver’s not being charged,” said police Lt. Nick Bado.

Police are also trying to determine why Zellner was walking across the elevated highway in the first place.

“From our perspective at this point all indications were that it was intentional but we’re going to continue the investigation,” he said.

Autopsy and toxicology reports will not be released for months, Bado said. Zellner’s family has been notified.

Traffic was diverted as a team of emergency workers spent hours collecting information before the tractor trailer was towed off the westbound lane of the I-290, which reopened at 6:40 a.m., according to police.
