Tonawanda News — A 49-year-old pedestrian was struck and killed in the Town of Tonawanda while crossing Niagara Falls Boulevard early Wednesday, police said.

The female victim, whose name is not being released, was crossing the boulevard from the Amherst side to the Tonawanda side near Willowridge Road at about 5:10 a.m.

"She was hit by a Chevy Cruise traveling southbound once she reached our side," Lt. Nick Bado said.

The pedestrian suffered serious head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses told police that the traffic light was green at the time of the accident.

"The pedestrian was also wearing dark clothes, and it was difficult to see," Bado said.

No charges have been levied against the male driver of the car, whose identity was also not released. Although the woman's body was sent for an autopsy, the results will likely be inconsequential, police said.

Bado said the woman had crossed the boulevard to shop at a 7-11 in Amherst and was traveling back to Tonawanda when the accident occurred. Police were not sure Wednesday afternoon if the pedestrian was a town resident.

"We are still digging into personal information and have to notify her next of kin," Bado said.
